The 49er FX class, a traditionally female event, will be an open event at the next Trofeo Princesa Sofía IBEROSTAR, so that female, male and mixed crews are eligible to compete.
The Spanish regatta announces this change following the recommendation from the 49er FX Class and in order to provide the maximum number of sailors with the opportunity of a good competition in a year in which the Olympic format is in its early stages.
According to Ben Remocker, 49er class manager, “the class is very pleased with the cooperation from Trofeo Princesa Sofia in this process. What is happening here is that the FX is frequently being adopted as a bridge boat by MNA’s. So instead of teams going directly to the Nacra 17 and 49er, many MNA’s are combining all their 16-22-year-old sailors into the FX to learn ‘fast boat’ skills in a larger/more competitive environment than if all these developing sailors were in the three boats separately”.
“It’s not suitable to have male and mixed race at a World Championship, for all funding implications, but a popular regatta like Princesa Sofia is perfect. The dominant senior FX teams will have more teams to push them, and the developing teams can have a chance to race”, Remocker explains.
