From 24th March to 1st April the bay of Palma will host the 48th edition of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR, one of the most important Olympic Classes regatta in the world. Around a thousand sailors from 45 nations will meet in Mallorca to start the Olympic path towards Tokyo 2020, in one of the most international sports event and with a higher participation in Spain.

In its 48th edition, the Spanish regatta will also include the cruisers and will be the start of the Tokio 2020 campaign

For the Olympic classes, the 48th Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR is the first event of the European Olympic sailing league, the Eurosaf Champions Sailing Cup, as last year. The other events of the circuit are Garda Trentino Olympic Week (Lago di Garda, Italy, 11-15 May), Delta Lloyd Regatta (Medemblik, The Netherlands, 24-28 May) and Kieler Woche (Kiel, Germany, 22-26 June).

The big world names of Olympic sailing taking part in this European league will start the path towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Mallorca. In fact, some International teams are already training in the bay of Palma, mainly based at Club Nàutic S’Arenal with team trainings increasing in February.

“Although it is a post-Olympic year –explains Race Manager, Ferran Muniesa-, this edition of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR promises big excitement. We do not know yet, but maybe Mallorca will showcase some of the changes of the Olympic sailing programme for Tokyo 2020, such as the flying Nacra or Nacra with foils. We are all willing to see the show of the future of sailing and the infrastructures, the climate and the conditions of the bay of Palma would provide the perfect scenario for this debut at the Trofeo Sofia”.

This edition brings an important novelty with the inclusion of the cruiser regatta. This year’s Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR will be the Baleares ORC Championship. Based at Real Club Náutico de Palma, the ORC “big boats” will present the first show in the bay of Palma, with racing scheduled on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March.

For the ten Olympic Classes invited in this edition, action in the racing areas will take place from Monday 27 March to Saturday 1 April, with qualifying series with 10 to 15 races (depending on the Class) and a Medal Stage, the grand final that will decide the winner of each category as well as the absolute winner of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR.

The venue for the cruisers will be Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Olympic Classes will be based at the other two organising Clubs, Club Nàutic S’Arenal and Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa. S’Arenal will be the venue for the Finn, 470 M & W and 49er & 49er FX and Can Pastilla will host the Laser, Laser Radial, RS:X M & W and the Nacra 17.

Online entry is open and the Media Accreditation Request form is available at http://www.trofeoprincesasofia.org/.
